Fluke 80K-40 High Voltage Probe

The Fluke 80K-40 is a high voltage probe used with an AC/DC voltmeter to measure voltages far exceeding what the measuring instrument can normally handle directly. It extends the measurement range up to 40,000 volts peak AC or DC, allowing for the checking of high voltages in equipment and other energy-limited circuits.

This is particularly relevant when working on internal high-voltage components in devices where measurements are needed without unduly loading the circuit. The probe acts as a 1000:1 voltage divider with a voltmeter with a 10 MΩ input impedance, which in practice means it converts a very high voltage to a level that the voltmeter can read correctly.

It is not intended for measuring on power grids or distribution systems. This is an important distinction, as this is a measurement tool for internal service and troubleshooting in equipment, not for general installation testing on the mains supply.

For a technician, the main advantage is that one can use a standard compatible voltmeter and access high-voltage measurements without switching to an entirely different instrument. At the same time, the high input impedance provides less load on the circuit, making the measurement more stable and more practically useful.
