Product Description

This Statshield® smock (item 221423) from DESCO is an antistatic jacket-with-cuffs style smock in size X Large. The smock is designed to be antistatic and low-tribocharging, forming a Faraday cage around the torso and arms to protect ESD-sensitive items from electrostatic fields from the wearer's clothing.

Material and Construction

  • Fabric: textured polyester with at least 9% carbon monofilament nylon woven through the material.
  • Seams: designed to maintain electrical continuity panel-to-panel and sleeve-to-sleeve in accordance with ANSI/ESD STM2.1.
  • Grounding: integrated hip-to-cuff grounding feature with 4 mm snap studs on the hip and conductive cuffs to provide a ground path for the wearer.

Documentation

Typical Applications

The Statshield® smock 221423 is used to protect ESD-sensitive items by shielding the operator's body field while providing a ground connection via the hip-to-cuff system. The smock is intended for situations where it is necessary to reduce electrostatic fields from the wearer's clothing and ensure a continuous ground path through the conductive material.

Installation and Testing

  • The smock must be fully closed so that the person's clothing is not exposed outside the smock.
  • Conductive cuffs must be in contact with the wearer's skin during use; they must not be pulled up over the sleeve.
  • Connect a coiled ground cord to the 4 mm snap stud on the left hip and connect it to a verified ground point or continuous monitor.
  • Panel-to-panel conductivity is recommended to be tested with suitable measuring equipment (e.g., Desco's Surface Resistance Meter Kit), and standard wrist strap testers or continuous monitors can be used for daily testing of the ground connection.

Maintenance

  • Wash according to manufacturer's instructions with liquid, non-ionic detergents; avoid bleach and fabric softeners.
  • Dry on low heat or air dry. The fabric's carbon monofilament is sensitive to heat; avoid temperatures above 48 °C (120 °F).
  • Under normal conditions and proper washing, the smock will retain its ESD properties for at least 100 washes (according to the manufacturer).
